The way we watch television has changed dramatically. You no longer necessarily need a satellite dish or rooftop aerial to enjoy British television. With a suitable broadband connection, live TV and on-demand entertainment can now be delivered directly over the internet.

What is Sky Stream?

Sky Stream is Sky’s internet-based television service. Instead of receiving Sky television through a satellite dish, the Sky Stream puck connects to your television and delivers content through your broadband connection.

What is the Manhattan Aero Freely?

The Manhattan Aero 4K takes a different approach.

The Aero is a compact streaming box running TiVo OS, with Freely built in. Freely is the UK streaming platform developed around the country’s major broadcasters, including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

It provides live television and on-demand programming over broadband without requiring a monthly Freely subscription. The current Freely platform offers more than 70 live channels alongside a substantial on-demand library.

The Aero also provides access to a range of additional streaming services, including Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, HBO Max and others, although subscriptions may be required for those services.

For someone who primarily wants British free-to-air television without committing to a Sky TV subscription, this makes the Aero a very different proposition from Sky Stream.

The exact channels and subscription inclusions can change, so it is worth checking the current package details before ordering.

The biggest difference: Sky content versus free-to-air television

Manhattan Aero with Freely is designed for people who primarily want UK free-to-air television.

4K picture quality

There is an important distinction, though: having the app on the device does not necessarily mean the content is free. For example, Netflix and Disney+ require the appropriate subscription.

Sky Stream also brings multiple services together through its interface, with Sky’s packages including selected streaming subscriptions. Sky’s current Ultimate TV package, for example, includes Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Disney+ and selected Hayu content alongside Sky channels.

Does the Manhattan Aero record programmes?

In a word No.

This is an important difference for anyone coming from an older Sky+ or Freeview recorder.

Freely is delivered as an internet stream, and Freely does not support recording. Manhattan explains that broadcasters do not permit Freely streamed content to be recorded.

Instead, viewers can generally use the broadcasters’ catch-up and on-demand services.

If recording is an essential part of your television setup, this is something to consider before choosing a Freely-only solution.

Which one is more suitable for an overseas viewer?

The answer depends largely on what you actually watch.

If your viewing revolves around Sky Atlantic, Sky entertainment channels, Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and Sky’s exclusive programming, then Sky Stream is the platform built around those requirements.

If you mainly want BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and other free-to-air British programming, the Manhattan Aero with Freely takes a much more streamlined approach.
